The Rise of Clean Skincare Brands
Thanks to the internet, consumers are more educated than ever about just what they’re putting in and on their bodies, as well how products impact the environment. Ingredients that most people didn’t even know about 10 years ago, like parabens, sulfates and preservatives, are now front and center. Thanks to the rise of green beauty bloggers and influencers, there are more educational resources than ever on what’s really in skincare products.
This trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The clean beauty and sustainable skincare industry is expected to reach $22 billion globally by 2024. And where the demand goes, the companies follow. While plenty of independent natural, organic and eco-friendly skincare brands have opened up shop, the big brands are also pivoting to rake in a big portion of that market.

TillyRuth was created by our founder Rachel Foody, a consumer who started to pull back the curtain of what was really in her homecare, beauty and skincare products. Once she opened up Pandora’s Box, she was shocked.
The catalyst for her investigation was her aunt’s diagnosis with Lyme Disease. Rachel’s aunt became extremely sensitive to chemicals, synthetics and toxins. Rachel saw how common products were affecting her aunt’s health and decided to take a hard look at her own lifestyle. In 2015, she meticulously sifted through the labels of her cleaning supplies, bath and beauty products, perfumes, pet products and supplements. Anything that had unsafe ingredients got the boot.
Rachel tried to restock her home with products that promised to be ‘clean’ and ‘natural,’ but found that most of them still included harmful preservatives and sketchy ingredients. Ingredients that may not have an effect on the body right away, but could have devastating effects long term. So she pulled up her sleeves and got to work making her own at-home products.
