Do You Want To Make A Lasting Impact On This World?

A question that many of us have asked ourselves is, "What legacy will I be leaving the world?" Some want to be famous, some want to raise children, some want to be remembered for their charitable work and contributions, etc. However, collectively, I think we would all like to know that we left the world in better shape than when we were brought into it.

However, will that be true?

We currently live in a society that is obsessed with single use products: water bottles, soda bottles, plates, silverware, razors, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, face wash, sandwich baggies, plastic wrap, and the list goes on and on. Don't even get me started on packaging! Convenience trumps the long term effects. If you truly think about it, go through your average day and write down all of the items that you use that you will throw away either immediately, or when you are done with them. When we actually pay attention, it adds up. Because it is no longer "one plastic bag for my snack", or "a few paper plates to make clean up easier".

You may be able to justify it as a little bit of trash here and there, but when it is all said and done, the average American produces approximately 4.5 lbs of trash DAILY. And MOST of that trash is comprised of recyclable items! Individuals' impact alone can be immense. Now think of the whole country, the whole continent, the whole world! Day to day the U.S. creates almost 3 times as much waste as the global average of 1.6 lbs/person daily.

"Every year we dump a massive 2.12 billion tons of waste. If all this waste was put on trucks, they would go around the world 24 times. This stunning amount of waste is partly because 99% of the stuff we buy is trashed within 6 months."

This issue is very near and dear to us at TillyRuth. We have put in a craaazy amount of time and effort into our sustainable commitment. I'm sure you already know that we plant 3 trees with every purchase, but we do so much more than that. All of our skincare products are in glass bottles that can not only be recycled, but they can be reused for other purposes! In addition, we created our refillable options so it saves you money but it's also more environmentally friendly than purchasing the same size products over and over again. This way you purchase the regular size just once and then fill those up when you run out using the refillable bottles. We also did a lot of research and spent a lot of time to ensure that everything we use is as environmentally friendly as we can make it. All of our product tags, packaging materials, and shipping materials (even down to the tape we use and the shipping labels) are easily recyclable and most are some combination of biodegradable and compostable, too. We really strive to be part of the solution, not the problem.

Take a second and decide, right now, what change or changes are you going to make? It's not about being perfect, it's about making realistic changes that will stick. I much rather you swap buying apples that come in a plastic bag for loose apples, than you get rid of all your waste but for only a week.

So yes! Be that famous person! Be that amazing parent! Be that charitable volunteer and/or philanthropist! AND . . . be that person who made small conscious changes in his or her life that benefitted the world. Your name might not be written in history textbooks because of this valuable transformation, but you can be damn sure that you left a wonderful lasting impact on this planet.
