Dangers of Fragrances in Skincare

Updated: May 20, 2021

We are all familiar with fragrances in our products. A coconut smelling shampoo, that berry scented chapstick, the grapefruit aroma face wash, etc. And these are all fine and dandy, right?

*Insert buzzer noise!

We may think and we may be told that these fragrances are harmless and added just for the pleasant smell. Some companies even try to convince us that the fragrances have added benefits. But that is just not the case. Nope, nope, nope. And we apologize in advance if any of this comes as a shock to you, but our main concern is to properly inform you so that you can make healthy and safe decisions moving forward.

Let's first discuss, what is "fragrance"? "More than 95 percent of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include: benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies." - Huffington Post

So then why are these chemicals so easily overlooked on the product ingredient list? Because U.S. manufacturers are able to legally hide hundreds of chemicals under the guise of "fragrance". It is a loophole from long ago that is now being exploited to poison the public without their knowledge. Beyond the consequences listed above, fragrances can disrupt hormone activity, cause reproductive malformation, and reduce sperm count. They have also been linked to breast and liver cancer, diabetes, ADHD, obesity, autism, neurological disorders, and more.

Now you may be asking yourself, "what do I do moving forward?" That is a great question and you are on the right path if you are asking yourself questions like this! The biggest thing is to READ INGREDIENT LABELS. It is all too easy to let advertising or marketing or even the front label of products sway you, but if you read the ingredients on a product, you can make much more educated and informed decisions. On this note, simply stay away from anything that contains "fragrance".

This may seem slightly daunting at first when during your first shopping experience of reading ingredient labels is filled with fragrance, fragrance, fragrance. So if you start to become overwhelmed or you feel yourself slipping back into your past uninformed ways, try this: instead of thinking in terms of "it's just easier to . . ." or "I'm already familiar with . . ." or "how bad could it really be . . .", think about how much healthier it will be and the lasting positive impacts for yourself and your loved ones that will come with taking a little more time to find the right products that don't slowly and consistently make you sick.
